Spay Clinic

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital offers a Spay Clinic for dogs as part of its community outreach activities and education program.  This service is offered to the general public at no cost to the client, and includes a pre-surgical physical examination, routine blood work and pain management, as well as anesthesia and the surgical procedure with one night of hospitalization after the surgery.

The patient does have to meet a minimum level of health on the physical examination to be eligible for the surgery, but the VTH is happy to offer additional services to ensure that any patient might become a candidate.

The Spay Clinic is part of the education and training program for 7th semester veterinary students. Under the direct supervision of a veterinary surgeon, students are given the opportunity to perform a spay surgery on a dog. This program has been in operation for many years, and has been very successful, with an average of 40 to 50 dogs spayed each semester.  We hope these efforts will prevent many unwanted litters of puppies and aid in reducing the pet overpopulation issue within the St. Kitts communities.
