How to Help A Friend
Concerned about a friend? Often counseling can help, including situations in which:
· Clarity is needed
· There may be personal harm or threat of harm
· Someone has experienced loss or death
· Stress has interfered with functioning
· Depressed mood or elevated anxiety has been present for two or more weeks
Encourage your friend to contact (jcamp@rossvet.edu.kn) or go to the Counseling Center in person (Room 12-17). You may want to accompany your friend if he/she is amenable. If your friend needs to see a counselor urgently or if he/she is in distress, a time will be scheduled to meet with the student that day. Otherwise, an appointment will be scheduled, as quickly as possible (taking into consideration class schedules).
It is helpful to let your friend know that your concern and support will continue if they see a counselor. Be clear that talking to you cannot substitute for professional counseling. Be respectful of the person you want to help, at the same time being clear with them about your concern and your perception of the need for a counseling contact. Convey your affirmation to your friend for having the courage to ask for help.
Remind the student that counseling services are confidential and free of charge. Counseling appointments are typically scheduled for 50 minutes.
Do not over-stress yourself; call ext. 1500 to speak to a counselor if you need further consultation about how to assist.
