Post-Graduate Education: Internship & Residency Training
Internships offer graduates an opportunity to pursue post-graduate education in academic, private or corporate practices. An internship is the first step in specialty training leading to board certification. Following an internship, a residency application may be submitted for further study in a particular discipline such as internal medicine, ophthalmology or surgery. Many laboratory animal medicine programs waive the internship requirement. This permits a graduate to enter directly into a residency program following graduation. Completion of a residency program is a prequalification for specialty board certification. Residency programs are generally three years in length.
Information on the application process and deadlines may be found by visiting the Veterinary Internship & Residency Matching Program web site. Applications are due in December; please check the web site for specific date and application requirements.
Why apply for a post-graduate experience?
- Provides additional development of clinical skills and case management acumen.
- Offers further responsibility while still under the mentorship of faculty and residents of the school or college, or specialists in private practice.
- Serves as a prerequisite to apply for residency training.
