Another Successful Open House For Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine

02/01/12

Basseterre, St. Kitts—Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) held its annual Open House on Saturday, January 28, 2012. RUSVM invited the St. Kitts and Nevis community to visit the campus and the event featured educational booths on topics related to veterinary medicine. The students of the veterinary school, with support from the faculty, host the event.

“The Open House provides the school with an opportunity to open our doors to the community and share information about veterinary medicine,” said Mr. Carmen Dabiero, vice president of the RUSVM student government. “Attendees were able to see, first-hand, what we do as students and learn what a veterinarian does in practice…it is much more than working with cats and dogs.”

From learning about flea and tick prevention to basic care for your pet, the booths provided participants the opportunity to gain information about veterinary medicine. Tours of the campus provided attendees an opportunity to see inside classrooms and laboratories as well as experience the overall layout of the grounds. During the tour, participants were able to view the anatomy laboratory where examples of skeletal bones were on display and see some of the animals on-campus, including donkeys and cows. Groups from local non-profit organizations, to visitors on the island, to school and family groups were able to combine the educational element with a fun day out.

“The Open House provides an opportunity to support Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine’s mission, which is summarized as serving the needs of animals and society,” said Ms. Jodi Peeler, assistant dean for communications and external relations. “If each person who visited our campus learned something new about animals or how to better care for their animals, then we consider the event a success. Our hope is that next year’s event is just as successful. The more we educate individual about veterinary medicine, the more our society can understand the impact all animal species have on our environment and in our lives.”

RUSVM hosts the annual Open House each January and plans to continue its promotion of veterinary awareness throughout the year. Future initiatives include educational seminars offered by RUSVM to the community. RUSVM also offers free spay clinic, where individuals can bring their female dog to the Ross University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) for spaying at no cost (For more information contact the VTH at 869-466-3056).
