Graduate Training (Residency)

In order to be eligible for residency programs, which usually begin on July 1 of every year, students must graduate in June and have their Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification in hand by June 30 of that year. Most residency programs accept applications from August to December, for entry the following July. Non-U.S. citizens who are not permanent residents must obtain the appropriate visa in order to be eligible for U.S. residencies.

National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)

A major avenue to securing a residency position is participation in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Students and graduates of Ross University who are seeking postgraduate residency positions in the United States are eligible to enroll with the NRMP, provided that they have submitted proof of having passed the examinations required to obtain certification from the ECFMG by February of the relevant year. ECFMG certification must be obtained before residency training can begin. The NRMP matches applicants with appropriate institutions offering residency positions.

Applicants who wish to do residency training as exchange visitors in the U. S. must also qualify in accordance with applicable law. An alien student must demonstrate that, if matched, he or she qualifies for a visa, is certified by ECFMG, and is also eligible for any license or permit that relevant state law may require. Information about this program can be obtained from:

Securing Residencies Outside the Match

Candidates of the School of Medicine who are eligible for graduation may obtain post-graduate training positions outside the NRMP. This is accomplished by either receiving an offer from a residency training director before a candidate enters the NRMP, or by way of a candidate being offered a program after the Match at a hospital that did not fill all its eligible positions.

Department of Graduate Affairs:
Residency Preparation Assistance

Approximately one year prior to graduation from Ross University, students need to begin planning for the residency process. The Department of Graduate Affairs is dedicated to helping students through this process. It also assists students in applying for licensing to state boards of medicine. The pre-application process for residency includes requests for forms, a Dean's Letter, and other requirements. The department sets certain deadlines for receipt of the pre-application materials to facilitate and adhere to the strict deadlines as mandated by the NRMP for students who participate in the Match. Enrolled students may access Graduate Planning Guide.

Communication Requirements

Given the global electronic dissemination of important information to the student body of the University, it is imperative that all students be responsibile for both maintaining an active e-mail account and checking that account on a regular basis. The Graduate Affairs Office can be reached at graduateaffairs@rossmed.edu.
