Dr. Fox earned his B.A. (1975) in Psychology from the University of Rochester and his M.A. (1979) and Ph.D. (1981) in Clinical Psychology from the University of Colorado. He has been a Licensed Clinical Psychologist in the state of Colorado since 1984.
Dr. Fox was a clinician for 12 years having practiced such specialties as forensic psychology, medical rehabilitation, and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. He entered the ranks of academia in 1993 at New Mexico Highlands University where he became a tenured Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology. He developed a specialization in the field of cultural psychopathology (i.e., culture and mental illness) and created a research program in West Africa.
Dr. Fox's research history reflects his committment to culture as well as to underrepresented, underserved, and vulnerable populations. Since 1998 he has been involved in studying/documenting trauma exposure and psychiatric distress among West African refugees of war. He was the first researcher to publish results concerning human atrocities and psychiatric consequences among refugees from Sierra Leone. He recently completed a four-year NIH-funded project to develop a West African version of the Harvard Trauma Questionnaire.
Currently, he serves as the psychology consultant to the University of Nebraska's dental restoration project for Sudanese refugees. Dr. Fox also serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Nervous & Mental Disease and the journal Transcultural Psychiatry.
