Dr. Joel Smolanoff has a distinguished career as a biochemist. He was a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University after receiving his PhD in organic chemistry the StateUniversity of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Smolanoff was a senior scientist with Rohm & Haas Inc in their Agricultural Chemicals Division and their Animal Health Division. He also was a partner, a consultant, and the director of research and development with Delaware Chemistries, Inc.
Dr. Smolanoff's research contributions have resulted in eleven patents. He pioneered the photochemical synthesis of novel odor elimination products. He also synthesized highly efficacious and low mammalian toxicity insect repellents for use on human and livestock, developed a low toxicity organophosphate insecticide for corn rootworm control, and developed novel order elimination products based on a natural product that binds small noxious organic molecules irreversibly.
Since Ross University School of Medicine in 1997 as an associate professor of biochemistry and researcher in bioorganic/medicinal chemistry, Dr. Smolanoff initiated a research project to design and synthesize novel inhibitors of HIV-1 Reverse Transcriptase, HIV-1 Integrase and the Retroviral Zinc Fingers on the Nucleocapsid p7 (Ncp7) protein. Two papers will be submitted for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The novel compounds will be submitted to the National Cancer Institute for HIV screening as well as screening in various tumor cell lines.
Dr. Smolanoff is a member of the American Chemical Society (Medicinal Chemistry Division), the American Chemical Society (Biochemistry Division) and the Society of Sigma Xi (a national honor society in chemistry).
